ViewNet Showcase 21 July 2010
The ViewNet showcase takes place 21 July 2010 at the University of Bristol. The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded project, ViewNet, will be holding its showcase in the Merchant Venturers Building of the University this week.
The ViewNet project is about mapping the environment; it enables users to create and visualise virtual content in its spatial context, using augmented reality and advanced visual tracking and mapping technology. It is a distributed system, allowing teams of users to share and exchange virtual content, facilitating efficient dissemination of information via global virtual maps.
As part of the collaboration, TRW Conekt used its expertise in video sensor systems, software and embedded hardware design to show how simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) algorithms demonstrated on laptop equipment could be adapted for operation in dedicated production hardware.
The showcase welcomes a guest speaker from the TSB, Dr Will Barton, head of technology programme and Prof Chris Firth from Thales Research and Technology. The TRW Conekt demonstration will illustrate how a ViewNet SLAM implementation could work in the field, and also how the applications can be realised as portable low-power embedded systems.
ViewNet partners include TRW Conekt, the University of Bristol. 3C Research, Sepura, Ordnance Survey Toshiba Research Europe, Thales Research and Technology, ST Microelectronics, National Physical Laboratory, 1Spatial and the Home Office Scientific Development Branch.
